Eighth graders are getting a jump start on their welding certifications by participating in the Summer Welding Program at San Diego High School (SDHS). These forward thinking students that are interested in receiving their Level 1 certifications early have made the decision to begin their welding careers during the summer leading up to their freshman year.
Mrs. Jessica Quintana, welding instructor, and Mr. Ruben Villa, construction instructor, began teaching on the first day of summer school. As they teach they students the ins-and-outs of welding, she is aided by a previous student of hers, freshman Adrian Gonzalez.
“[Welding] has definitely given me a plan… It’s something that I like and that I think is good for me,” said Adrian. Mrs. Quintana and her apprentice are sharing their knowledge with the younger generation and leading them down a path they know to be beneficial.
This summer welding program offers safety instruction, examples of paperwork, and the hands-on experiences students need to succeed in their careers. In the interview with three students, Adrian and eighth graders Evan Gonzalez and Thomas Cantu, they discussed how the program is affecting their perspectives on welding.
“You could really make bank off of [welding] if you know what you’re doing,” said Thomas.
Some techniques the students have learned so far include using a grinder, proper use of an acetylene torch, and different techniques of stick welding. These techniques are used in a variety of different scenarios welders face throughout their careers. By teaching these young welders such important methods, they are learning how to be successful as welders.
“I feel like welding has changed my perspective on it and how greatly it’s used in the world,” Evan said, “I just want to be a benefit to [the world].”
